A trip to “City of the Goat” with foreign guides -- 2018 Discovery Camp in Guangzhou

    Every student expects long holiday. The long break provides multiple choices for them. Some review the previous studies and prepare for the new term; some explore the big world through the screens of television and phone; some go out to experience the wonderful world by themselves.

Camp Activities: The Ocean of Flowers

    Upon arrival in Guangzhou, students would accommodate in a fairy camp, and then begin their English immersion class. Would it be different studying in the ocean of flowers?

Walking Class: Fortune Hunting

    Day 2, campers visited Lingnan Impression to know about the stories of Lingnan area. They conducted “Fortune Hunting” with the handbook and eventually, found various Lingnan dialects, objects and snacks.

    Campers learned much knowledge about Lingnan through activities.


    In the afternoon, campers visited Huangpu Military Academy, the cradle of Chinese militarists and the shrine of the National Revolution (1924-1927). Foreign teachers raised some questions which are all related to the people and history of the academy, and distributed some clues to the campers. In search of the answers in the academy, campers got a basic understanding of the modern military history of China.

Waling Class: First Contact with City of the Goat”

    To see the prosperity of Guangzhou from day to night, to feel a southern metropolis and to broaden students' horizons.

    Day 3, the Walking Class leads campers to know about Guangzhou. Campers took the double-decker sightseeing bus to see around in the prosperous town, the Lingnan style Qilou (overhang) and ancient Xiguan in Guangzhou.

    On the bus, foreign teachers discussed about the map and landmarks. Campers made explanations to the foreign teachers when they met difficult Chinese.

    Then, the foreign teachers took students to Shamian, a European architectural complex. After the First Opium War (1840-1842), Shamian became the concessions of France and the United Kingdom, and therefore built many consulates, churches, as well as Baroque, Gothic and combined styles architectures. The foreign teachers and campers played interactive games at Shamian, and they were all very happy.

    Later, the trip to Yuexiu Park brought a totally different experience. The Statue of the Five Goats is not only a landmark of Guangzhou, but also the reason why Guangzhou is called “City of the Goat”. Campers sent out postcards here. When they receive their postcards someday in the future, they will definitely recall this good memory in Guangzhou.

    In the evening, campers and foreign teachers went for the Night Cruise on the Pearl River that has been long expected. The night view of the Pearl River is one of the Eight Sights of Guangzhou. The colorful light of Canton Tower, Guangzhou Library and Guangzhou Opera House deeply attracted all the campers.

Walking Class: The Humanity of Hong Kong

    In the following days, campers went to Hong Kong to feel its humanities accumulated via history and the prosperity of an international metropolis.

   

    Hong Kong is a city that respects rules and orders. Anyone who drops litter carelessly, even a tissue, will be fined. Campers learned many rules from life and put them into practice like sorting garbage, waiting for the green light when crossing the road, etc.

    Visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a collegiate university to experience its academic atmosphere.

    Went to Hong Kong Space Museum for a big screen movie to know about the marine microorganism.

    Enjoyed the sea breeze at the Victoria Harbor. Looked at the skyscrapers on the Hong Kong Island across the harbor, campers were astonished and took photos.

Have a Close Contact with the Animals

    At Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park, campers got excited to see the white tiger, giraffe, koala twins, panda triplets, Asian elephants, and the life-like dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park.

    At Hong Kong Ocean Park, the largest water park in Southeast Asia, campers had a close contact with the maritime animals. Except for hundreds of different fishes, they also enjoyed the amusement facilities and watched the performance of dolphins.

    The one-week activity enriched students’ winter holiday. They had a lot of fun, visited different cities, learned much knowledge beyond textbooks, broadened their horizons and cultivated their abilities for problem solving and independent living.
